18 July 2016

Graphic shows timeline of events over the weekend.
July 18, 2016 -- Turkey has arrested 6,000 people after a failed coup. The overall death toll for the weekend violence has risen to 290, the foreign ministry said. More than 100 of those were participating in the coup.
President Erdogan has repeated an accusation that U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gulen was behind the plot, and called for him to be extradited from the United States. Gulen strongly denies any involvement.

GRAPHIC NEWS: UK’s Trident nuclear weapon

18 jULY 2016

Graphic shows Trident weapons system.

July 18, 2016 -- MPs will vote on July 18 on renewing the UK's Trident nuclear weapons system. Prime Minister David Cameron has said he believes the vote will confirm support for replacing the full fleet of submarines, their missiles and warheads.
Britain has four nuclear-powered Vanguard-class submarines, of which one is always on armed patrol. Each submarine carries 16 Trident D5 missiles, each of which is designed to carry up to 12 nuclear warheads known as MIRVs (Multiple Independently Targetable re-entry Vehicles). The Royal Navy's missiles are armed with three MIRVs after the 1998 Strategic Defence Review imposed a limit of 48 per submarine.

Calculations by Reuters and a Conservative MP suggest the cost of replacing Trident could reach £167 billion ($201bn). The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) estimates the price tag will come to at least £205bn.

Graphic shows build up of bad loans since eurozone financial crisis. Since 2009, almost 100,000 Italian companies have become bankrupt.

July 18, 2016 -- Italy’s banks hold some €360 billion of bad loans which challenge new EU rules that require private investors to be “bailed in” before banks are “bailed out” with EU taxpayers’ money.
Prime Minister Matteo Renzi plans to inject €40 billion into banks in bid to deal with “sofferenze” -- €200 billion of rotten debt.

On July 29, the results of bank stress-tests are due. These could serve as a catalyst for Rome to intervene with taxpayers’ money.

In October Italy votes in a referendum on constitutional change. Renzi will likely resign if his Partito Democratico loses the ballot.

Polls suggest that the opposition 5-Star Movement of Beppo Grillo is a genuine contender for government at the next general election. Grillio has called for a national referendum on whether the country should leave the euro.

GRAPHIC NEWS: World female leaders

14 jULY 2016

Graphic shows selected female leaders around the world and shows share of the global $73.4 trillion GDP.

July 14, 2016 -- Two of the world’s five biggest economies now have a female leader. Women-led nations currently produce 15% of global GDP -- but this will rise to almost 40% if Hillary Clinton becomes U.S. president.
There are currently 20 female world leaders, (excluding monarchs), according to United Nations data. These women account for about one-in-ten of today’s leaders of UN member states.

Female leadership is more common in some regions of the world than others, with the Nordic countries standing out. Mexico, like the U.S., has never had a woman as chief executive, and Canada’s first female prime minister, Kim Campbell, served for just four months in 1993.

GRAPHIC NEWS: NATO bolsters Russian deterrence

8 July 2016

Graphic shows profiles of the NATO Response Force (NRF) and its “spearhead” component, the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF).
July 8, 2016 -- NATO leaders assembled in Warsaw are set to give the formal go-ahead to the greatest reinforcement of collective alliance defence since the end of the Cold War, including deployment of four combat battalions of 1,000 troops each to Poland and the three Baltic states. The new units, totaling around 4,000 troops, will serve as a reassurance to allies feeling threatened by Russia that NATO has their back, and also as a warning to Moscow that a military incursion into the territory of front-line NATO states could bring it into head-to-head confrontation with the whole alliance.

The UK voted by 52% to 48% to leave the EU. The Brexit vote to leave the EU has sparked demands from far-right parties for referendums in France and the Netherlands.
