July 8, 2016 -- NATO leaders assembled in Warsaw are set to give the formal go-ahead to the greatest reinforcement of collective alliance defence since the end of the Cold War, including deployment of four combat battalions of 1,000 troops each to Poland and the three Baltic states. The new units, totaling around 4,000 troops, will serve as a reassurance to allies feeling threatened by Russia that NATO has their back, and also as a warning to Moscow that a military incursion into the territory of front-line NATO states could bring it into head-to-head confrontation with the whole alliance.
