But the country is now in turmoil – gaining a grim reputation for sex attacks – as it attempts to absorb huge numbers of migrants coming to Europe to seek asylum.
Violence and crime is rife with police admitting to several “no-go” zones.
For years Sweden saw itself as a “humanitarian superpower” – making its mark not by fighting wars but by offering shelter to victims of war.
But increasing violence among the migrant population has led some to question this goodwill.

The Scandinavian country, with a population of 9.5 million, welcomed more than 160,000 asylum applications last year – the largest influx in the EU by proportion of its population.
The country is expected to take in as many as 200,000 refugees in 2016.

Meanwhile, to the fury of many Swedes, police have blamed Scandinavian teenage girls, “Nordic alcohol culture” and general Western behaviour for the steep rise in sex attacks which have recently been carried out by migrants.
