Brexit will STOP Brussels creating a ‘DANGEROUS’ EU army, senior French admirals say

LEAVING the European Union would stop Brussels bosses forming a “dangerous” EU army, two senior French admirals have said.

Vice Admiral Michel Debray and Rear Admiral Claude Gaucherand said a Brexit would put the “screeching breaks” on plans for an army made from the 28-member bloc.

In a letter condemning the union, the pair went on to say Britain’s neighbours would still cooperate with the UK on “close and friendly terms” because of the country’s military and economic power.

The letter also said the Remain campaign’s “scaremongering” claims that Britain’s military would be weakened after a Brexit make “no sense”.

It reads: “Viewed rationally and dispassionately from Paris, the scaremongering that we have seen the British people subjected to makes no sense.

“The UK will remain a major force after Brexit, a major military, security and economic power that its neighbours will want to cooperate with on close and friendly terms.

“A Leave vote will apply screeching brakes to those pushing for the integration of the armed forces of the EU’s member states and the otherwise inevitable and dangerous development of a ‘common defence’ as the treaties predict.”

The senior French chiefs cited Charles de Gaulle and Sir Winston Churchill in their argument for a Brexit, claiming the two former statesmen would be “vindicated” if voters opt out of the EU on June 23.

The warning comes as a Foreign Office minister warned Britain will be completely powerless to stop the creating of an EU army.

James Duddridge told Express.co.uk it is “not realistic” for David Cameron to claim the UK will play no part in an EU military force, adding that Brussels frequently goes against Britain’s interests on matters of foreign policy.

He said the UK is forced to “alter” its ambitions on the world stage “time and time again” to fit the needs of the 28-nation bloc, which are often “dumbed down” to the “lowest common denominator”.

The minister stated: “In many cases we could be bolder and more successful as an independent member state and be a leader, rather than just badging up our policy under the EU flag.”

The Tory expressed his fears Brussels is planning a raft of measures to “grab more cash and spend it on Euro priorities rather than British ones” if the UK votes to remain this month.
