The British people have not fallen for the fantasy, says PENNY MORDAUNT

IN LIEU of a positive story, the Remain camp has been trying to frighten us.

Penny Mordaunt
The Remain camp has been trying to frighten us

It has wanted us to be cowering so far behind our sofas that the thought of taking back control of our own destiny is all too terrifying a prospect to contemplate. The most irresponsible scaremongering has focused on our national security.

We are told that border checks at Calais would cease if we Brexit. This is despite the French interior minister’s confirmation that, because of a separate bilateral agreement, they will stay in place.

We are told that we couldn’t use the European arrest warrant, despite the Government’s own independent adviser confirming that we could. We are told that there are no plans for an EU army, even though a draft strategy has been drawn up by Germany and the EU Battlegroup exercises on Salisbury Plain.

We are warned that Brexit will trigger civil unrest and extremism in Europe but all these ills exist now, not because of Britain’s referendum but because of the economic and social harm caused by the Eurozone.

We know our citizens are in greater risk because European judges deny us the right to control our borders, deport criminals and use all available intelligence tools. We are told that if Turkey joins the EU it will be in the third millennium, when only 10 weeks ago the EU agreed to accelerate the accession.

The real danger comes from remaining in a politically dysfunctional Union, which has no solution to its Eurozone crisis and does not allow member states to control immigration. The British look at the tough issues: how to increase wages; provide more and better housing; and how public services can cope with rising demands.

We know immigration must be controlled and can only be so if we leave the EU. We consider the solidarity across Europe in the wake of terrorism; how our town hall flew flags at half-mast in the wake of the Paris and Brussels attacks; the prayers said in our places of worship; the help and support offered from all quarters.

And we conclude that our security co-operation is not dependent on European bureaucracy, but on something far deeper: our collective humanity. We reflect on the EU’s unacceptable youth employment rates; the human suffering and question the merits of being chained to the eurozone.
Britons will use their common sense; and we will use our courage too. Change does take courage. So vote Leave.
